Oil India Limited and CSIR signed umbrella Memorandum of Understanding

Oil India Limited and CSIR ink MoU

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in New Delhi and Oil India Limited (OIL), a Navaratna NOC, have signed an umbrella Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote technical collaboration across the Energy value chain. This will be a joint effort between CSIR and OIL labs.

Dr. N Kalaiselvi, DG, CSIR & Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), and Dr. Ranjit Rath, CMD, OIL, signed the MoU. The ceremony was attended by OIL’s D(O) and D(E&D), MD(NRL), JS&FA (CSIR), JSA (CSIR), LA (CSIR), CSIR’s Heads of Scientific Directorate, and other Senior Officers from both OIL and CSIR. The Directors of CSIR laboratories and notable CSIR scientists participated in the event virtually.

The overarching MoU establishes a formal framework for collaboration between OIL and CSIR Labs. The MoU’s goal is to encourage collaboration in the pursuit of new technologies for energy security research. The preliminary areas highlighted for joint R&D activity and technological collaboration are as for New hydrocarbon exploration frontiers;

Upstream and downstream activities; alternative and renewable energy, batteries/storage systems;

Green and renewable hydrogen / biohydrogen (H2) for pollution reduction and bioremediation

Waste treatment includes oil separation and recovery from wastewater and waste sludge, including crude oil sludge; corrosion inspection and anti-corrosion coating; lithium and rare earth element extraction from oilfield water; stranded natural gas to fuel molecules; and decarbonisation and net zero targets.

Dr. Ranjit Rath stated on the occasion, “OIL has a long association with CSIR labs like IIP and NEIST and has worked together in the past.”

The current MoU will pave the path for collaboration with all CSIR labs. As an integrated energy firm, OIL aims to be at the forefront of technology adoption in the energy value chain, with a worldwide presence that adds value to stakeholders. The partnership with CSIR would serve as a catalyst to attain these goals in mission mode.”

“CSIR is a premier R&D Organization engaged in cutting-edge R&D and developing technologies and products in frontiers areas of Science and technology,” stated the DG of CSIR. The CSIR is well-known for its strengths and expertise in industrial research and development. As a result, this partnership would not only be mutually advantageous, but would also benefit the country and the common man in the long run.”

Both organizations have also committed to collaborate on capacity building initiatives such as training and skill development. The OIL will also consider offering Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) financing assistance in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, Aspirational Districts, Rural Development, Government missions/initiatives, and so on.
