Oil India controls fluid flow from shut-in well NHK-67

Oil India

On October 23, 2023, around 12:44 p.m., Oil India Limited (OIL), a premier oil and gas exploration and production firm in India, successfully stemmed the uncontrolled flow of fluid (mostly water) from the shut-in well NHK-67 near Duliajan in Assam. The capping operation was carried out with the assistance of the local community, district administration, the State Government of Assam, and the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India.

The well NHK-67 was shut off in 2016, but on October 19, 2023, vandals destroyed it, resulting in an uncontrolled discharge of fluid. OIL quickly sent a team to handle the situation and plug the well.

The capping operation was difficult since the well was in a highly populated region and the uncontrolled flow of fluid posed a threat to the environment and the safety of the local community. OIL’s team, on the other hand, was able to successfully cap the well within 60 hours following the disaster.

The well was killed with a pressure reading of zero after the capping procedure, showing that the uncontrolled flow of fluid had been totally stopped. OIL is now rehabilitating the well and guaranteeing its safety.
