Make In India: Coal Ministry Reviews Report of High Level Committee to Enhance Production of Heavy Equipment

Coal Ministry

To minimize India’s reliance on high-capacity mining equipment imports and enhance domestic production, the Ministry of Coal (Coal Ministry) is making ongoing efforts to strengthen indigenous manufacturing capabilities in the coal mining sector. These activities are consistent with Aatmanirbhar Bharat’s goals of supporting “Make in India.”

To achieve this goal, an interdisciplinary high-level committee was formed with representatives from the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the Ministry of Railways, SCCL, NLCIL, NTPC, WBPDCL, BEML, Caterpillar, Tata Hitachi, and GAINWELL, and consultations were held with industry associations and various other stakeholders to suggest ways to boost domestic manufacturing of Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) and Underground mining equipment such as High Wall (HW) miners.

The committee is led by the Director (Technical) CIL and is tasked with identifying strategies and mechanisms to boost local manufacturing of HEMM and other subsurface equipment. The committee presented a draught report, which was examined by the Secretary of the Ministry of Coal and discussed at the Ministry level.
