The Ministry of Coal’s Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has announced the start of commercial operations at the state-of-the-art 5.0 MTPA Madhuband Washery. The washery began commercial operations on November 29, 2023, in the presence and direction of Shri Samiran Dutta, CMD, BCCL.
In March 2022, Union Minister of Coal, Mines, and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Pralhad Joshi formally inaugurated the washery. Following that, rigorous Load Tests, Trial Runs, and Performance Guarantee Tests (PGT) were carried out to ensure its operational efficacy.
This technologically advanced washery distinguishes itself through logistical efficiency and cutting-edge technology, cementing its position as one of India’s largest Coking Coal Washeries. This coking coal washery will serve as a catalyst for AtmaNirbhar Bharat’s vision by allowing the country to supply more washed coking coal to the steel sector, reducing the outflow of foreign exchange through coking coal imports.
BCCL
The start of commercial production at this washery reflects BCCL’s consistent effort towards import substitution of coking coal in India, a critical step given the current challenges faced by the steel industry due to soaring import coking coal prices. Furthermore, this initiative supports the goal of import substitution by increasing the supply of indigenous washed coking coal at competitive prices, thereby accelerating economic growth.
The washery ensures a consistent supply of high-quality washed coking coal to the steel industry, allowing for more efficient use of our limited coking coal reserves through advanced washing processes.
