Astral Limited (Astral; formerly Astral Poly Technik Ltd.; part of the Astral group) contributed to the building of 9 ICE STUPAS throughout Ladakh through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm, Astral Foundation, on the occasion of World Water Day. The stupas are being built with the intention of saving millions of liters of water that can be utilized for irrigation, farming, and other activities in the future.
The below-zero temperature causes the sprinkled water to freeze, forming an Ice Stupa in the shape of a cone. The mid-size ICE Stupa, which stands around 100 feet tall, can save enough water to fill three to four Olympic-sized swimming pools. Water is sprayed on the Stupa from November to March, and as summer approaches, the Stupa begins to melt, providing water for irrigation, household use, and other purposes.
As part of its commitment to help India’s water conservation efforts, Astral Foundation has provided 4,200 meters of pipelines as well as the materials needed to construct Ice Stupas. This project aids in the delivery of water when it is most required.
Astral Foundation – World Water Day
“We are extremely thrilled and proud to be connected with Mr. Wangchuk’s globally-acclaimed Ice Stupa effort on the occasion of World Water Day, which has touched the lives of hundreds of people in Ladakh,” Mr. Kairav Engineer, VP Business Development, Astral Limited, said of the partnership. Our primary motivation for partnering with Mr. Wangchuk and his institute was to confront the severe problem of water scarcity that is threatening lives in the region and to adopt imaginative methods to alleviate it.
“Astral, as a socially responsible corporation, has long supported causes linked to water conservation across geographies through its Astral Foundation, and this programme is another step in that direction,” he continued.
In Ladakh, a stunning region situated between the Greater Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges, mountain glaciers are an irreplaceable source of fresh water for many people and an enormously important source of water for drinking and crop irrigation.
