Assam’s Manohari Gold Tea breaks record sells

For its clients Cafe Nilofer in Hyderabad and other places, RK Tea Sales acquired handcrafted tea. The high sales of the popular Manohari Gold tea, according to Rajan Lohia, managing director of Monohari Tea, are good news for Assam and its tea sector.

“We have been producing Manohari Gold for the past five years, and the tea’s popularity and demand continue to rise daily. We received Rs 1.15 lakh every kilogramme of our produce sold this year. For Assam and the state’s tea sector, it’s good news. The tea was bought by the Hyderabad-based Neelofer Cafe from a private portal in Kolkata, Lohia continued.

The land in upper Assam had previously commanded the highest price of Rs 99,999. The estate, however, shattered the existing record on December 16 when it sold the tea for Rs. 1.15 lakh.

At the Guwahati Tea Auction Center in December 2021, Manohari Gold tea was auctioned off for Rs 99,999 per kilogramme (GTAC).

In 2020, the Dikom Tea Estate charged Rs 75,000 per kilogramme for its Golden Butterfly Tea. Later, a specialty tea produced by Donyi Polo Tea Estate in East Siang, Arunachal Pradesh, brought the same price at the Guwahati auction.

Assam is the world’s largest tea-growing region, with more than 850 major tea estates, and produces more than 52% of the country’s total tea production. However, price stagnation since 2014, unfavourable weather circumstances, and growing production costs have put the industry’s players in a dilemma. Many estates have responded to this by producing premium tea in an effort to command higher prices, cater to affluent customers, and establish their brands.
